Peak Season
Ajmer in January
Rajasthan, India
January in Ajmer is crisp and clear — mornings around 7°C, afternoons a comfortable 22°C. The Dargah Sharif hums with devotion but not the crushing pilgrimage crowds of Urs season. Pushkar, 14km away, is equally calm after its November fair hangover.
The January story
The Dargah Sharif of Khwaja Moinuddin Chishti is India's most important Sufi shrine, and January lets you experience it without being crushed by humanity. The inner sanctum is accessible, the qawwali performances happen nightly, and the surrounding bazaar of rose petals, chadar offerings, and attars operates at a human pace. Ana Sagar Lake — built in the 12th century — is full from monsoon recharge and makes for a gorgeous sunset walk along Daulat Bagh gardens. Pushkar, a quick auto ride over the Nag Pahar hills, offers its temple town charm minus the November fair chaos. Budget hotels in both towns are plentiful and cheap.
