Fair
Doodhpathri in July
Jammu & Kashmir, India
July monsoon reaches Doodhpathri with 150-200mm. The meadows remain green but the streams swell to torrents, the road from Khag can get muddy, and clouds sit in the valley at eye level. Gujjar shepherds continue their seasonal stay regardless.
The July story
Monsoon Doodhpathri is atmospheric but demanding. The valley in cloud is otherworldly — meadow grass visible for 50 metres, then white nothing. When clouds lift (and they do, dramatically, sometimes for minutes), the rain-washed valley is more vivid than any clear-sky version. The streams turn from milky to muddy, which changes the character from pastoral to wild. The Gujjar families continue herding through rain with a nonchalance that makes your waterproof jacket feel performative. Food stalls at the entrance may or may not operate. Day trips only, weather permitting.
