Chitkul in January
Himachal Pradesh, India
Road closed and subzero temperatures make winter access impossible
January buries Chitkul under deep snow. At 3,450 metres, India's last inhabited village before the Tibetan border sees temperatures plunge to -15°C at night and struggle past -2°C by day. The road from Sangla (25 km) closes intermittently. The Baspa river freezes at its edges. This is not a tourist month — it is a survival month.
The January story
The 40-odd families who winter here live on stored grain, dried meat, and a toughness that makes everything you have ever called difficult seem optional. If you reach Chitkul in January (possible on cleared days, confirm locally), you find a village that has existed for centuries without needing you. The Buddhist Mathi temple sits under snow, prayer flags rigid with ice. The wheat-drying platforms are empty. Wood smoke is the dominant scent, and the silence between the wind gusts is total. No guesthouses guarantee operation — call the HPTDC or Wanderer's Nest ahead. If open, ₹800-2,000/night. January Chitkul is earned, not visited.
