Good Time
Chitkul in May
Himachal Pradesh, India
May is peak Chitkul. Temperatures hit 10-22°C, the village is fully alive, and every traveller on the Kinnaur-Spiti circuit passes through. The ITBP road is open, wildflowers cover the meadows above the village, and the Baspa valley looks like a tourism board fantasy — except nobody has invested in a tourism board.
The May story
The trek to Nagasthi (the meadow above Chitkul, 2-3 hours) offers a perspective that the village-level views cannot: the entire Baspa valley spreading below, with Chitkul a cluster of slate-roofed houses at the terminus. The Indo-Tibetan border feels tangible here — the peaks beyond belong to another country. Village life peaks: children play in lanes, women card wool on doorsteps, and the single shop stocks everything from biscuits to rope. May evenings remain cool (8-10°C), perfect for stargazing in one of India's least light-polluted zones. Rooms: ₹1,500-4,000/night. Book a week ahead for weekends.
