Chitkul in December
Himachal Pradesh, India
December seals Chitkul under winter. Temperatures hit -15°C to -5°C, snow buries the village to window height, and the road is firmly closed. The 40-odd families who remain live as their ancestors did: on stored grain, firewood, and community. You are not getting here in December unless you trek.
The December story
The occasional winter trekker reaches Chitkul from Sangla on foot (25 km, 6-8 hours, snow conditions critical). What they find: a village that does not know it is December 25th or 31st, operating on rhythms older than the Gregorian calendar. Smoke rises from slate chimneys, children play in snow cleared from doorways, and the Mathi temple's prayer wheels turn whenever someone passes. There are no tourists, no guesthouses, no prices — only hospitality from families who may or may not expect visitors. This is the rawest form of travel in India. Not recommended for most. Transformative for some.
