Caution
Auli in July
Uttarakhand, India
July buries Auli in monsoon cloud. The meadows are green but invisible behind mist. The cable car may operate intermittently. Treks are inadvisable due to slippery trails and zero visibility. Joshimath, below, handles Char Dham pilgrim traffic but Auli itself is dormant.
The July story
There is no practical reason to visit Auli in July unless you are a botanist studying alpine flora in monsoon conditions. The meadows are green and flower-rich, but you won't see them through the cloud. The cable car runs occasionally but views are nil. Joshimath, the base town, is busy with Badrinath and Hemkund Sahib pilgrims — there's life and energy there, but it's focused on pilgrimage, not tourism. The Joshimath-Auli road can become treacherous in heavy rain. If you find yourself in Joshimath in July for Char Dham reasons, a cable car ride up to Auli for a few hours of walking in misty meadows is pleasant but not a destination in itself. Save Auli for another month.
