Spiti vs Ladakh

The two destinations every serious India traveler debates. Both are high-altitude desert valleys. Both are hard to reach. Both change you. Here's how to decide.

Access: Ladakh Wins

Ladakh has an airport (Leh). You can fly from Delhi in 90 minutes. Spiti has no airport — the nearest is Bhuntar (8 hours away). If time is limited, Ladakh is more practical.

Remoteness: Spiti Wins

Spiti feels more isolated. Smaller villages, fewer tourists, more basic infrastructure. Key Monastery perched on a cliff with 20 monks and no WiFi. Chicham bridge over a 1,000ft gorge. Spiti hasn't been polished for tourism the way Ladakh has.

Both peak June-September. Spiti: 5/5 in June, September, October. Ladakh: 5/5 in June, July, September. The difference: Spiti is accessible from May-October (6 months), Ladakh from June-September (4 months). Spiti's window is wider.

Kids: Both No

Spiti: 1/5. Ladakh: 2/5 (Leh only). Neither is appropriate for young children. Altitude, road quality, medical access — the trifecta of "not for families."

Budget

Spiti is significantly cheaper. Budget homestays (₹500-800/night), basic food, no luxury options. Ladakh has a wider range — budget to luxury — but the floor is higher (flights to Leh aren't cheap).

The Verdict

Ladakh for a first high-altitude experience (fly in, acclimatize, explore). Spiti for the second trip when you want something rawer. Do Ladakh in June-July, Spiti in September-October. Ideally, do both in different years.
