Where Solo Women Actually Feel Safe: 15 Destinations That Pass Our Test

We checked the safety ratings, network coverage, hospital access, and police presence. These 15 scored highest.

Every travel article about solo women in India opens with a disclaimer. We are skipping that. Instead, here is what we actually measured.

NakshIQ assigns a safety rating from 1 to 5 for every destination in our database. The rating is not based on vibes, anecdotes, or how many Instagram reels show women dancing there. It is based on infrastructure: mobile network coverage across carriers, proximity to hospitals, police station presence, emergency helpline responsiveness, and whether rescue services exist.

We then cross-reference with the solo_suitable flag — a boolean that requires a destination to meet minimum thresholds across all safety infrastructure categories before it gets set to true.

Here are the 15 destinations that scored 5/5 on safety and passed the solo-suitable test.

15 destinations at 5/5
Safety rating — based on network, hospitals, police, and emergency services. Not opinions.

1. Chandigarh — Safety Rating 5/5

India's best-connected city. Full 4G and 5G coverage on every carrier: Jio, Airtel, Vi, BSNL. WiFi available everywhere. Police station in every sector. PGI Hospital, one of the best in the country, is within city limits. Multiple private hospitals as backup.

Chandigarh is a planned city. The grid layout means you can always orient yourself. Public spaces are well-lit. The Rock Garden and Sukhna Lake are populated at all hours. For a solo woman traveler, the infrastructure here is as close to failsafe as India gets.

We did not include destinations where the scenery is stunning but the phone signal drops to zero. Infrastructure is not optional. It is the foundation of confidence.

2. Jaipur — Safety Rating 5/5

Full 4G everywhere. Jio, Airtel, Vi, BSNL all work. WiFi at most hotels and cafes. SMS Hospital, Fortis, and Narayana provide medical coverage at the level of a metro city. SDRF Rajasthan for rescue. 108 ambulance is reliable.

Jaipur is a major tourist city with established infrastructure for solo travelers. Amer Fort, Jantar Mantar, and Hawa Mahal are comfortable to visit alone. The old city has dense foot traffic which, counterintuitively, makes it safer — you are never isolated. December scores 5/5, making it the ideal solo winter trip.

Minimum network requirement for every destination on this list

3. Shimla — Safety Rating 5/5

Full network coverage on all carriers. IGMC Shimla is the best hospital in Himachal Pradesh. Mountain rescue services available. 108 ambulance functional. HP Tourism helpline responsive.

The Mall Road and Ridge area are pedestrian-friendly. The toy train from Kalka to Shimla is safe and scenic. Shimla's colonial-era layout means well-maintained public infrastructure. October scores 5/5 with 8-18 degree weather, making it the best month for solo exploration.

GO

Top pick: Chandigarh. Full 5G, PGI Hospital, police in every sector, grid layout. The closest India gets to failsafe solo travel infrastructure.

NakshIQ Verdict

4. McLeod Ganj — Safety Rating 5/5

Full 4G coverage (weakens on Triund trek). Zonal Hospital Dharamshala is modern. Delek Hospital in McLeod handles most issues. Mountain rescue via police. 108 ambulance reliable.

McLeod Ganj has a large solo traveler community, both Indian and international. The Tibetan settlement creates a welcoming atmosphere. Cafes are open late. The main market area is well-lit and pedestrian-friendly. The Triund trek is done solo by hundreds of women every month — we would still recommend starting early and telling your hotel.

5. Udaipur — Safety Rating 5/5

Full 4G. Jio, Airtel, Vi, BSNL operational. Multiple hospitals including GBH American Hospital. SDRF Rajasthan covers the region. Lake Pichola area is heavily patrolled as a major tourist zone.

Udaipur's old city is dense and walkable. The lakeside promenades are populated until late evening. Haveli-style hotels in the old city mean you are always close to other travelers. It consistently ranks in the top 5 destinations for solo women in every survey we have seen — and our infrastructure data confirms why.

6. Haridwar — Safety Rating 5/5

Full 4G and 5G across the city. All operators work. WiFi in hotels, ashrams, and restaurants. AIIMS Rishikesh is 25 kilometres away — one of the best hospitals in North India. Multiple private hospitals in the city. SDRF Uttarakhand has an active Haridwar unit.

The ghats are crowded, which provides safety in numbers. The city has a strong ashram culture, meaning accommodation designed for solo spiritual travelers already exists. Har Ki Pauri evening aarti is a communal experience where being alone feels natural, not conspicuous.

7. Jodhpur — Safety Rating 5/5

Full 4G on all carriers. MDM Hospital plus multiple private hospitals. Rajasthan Tourism provides tourist assistance. 108 ambulance operational.

Mehrangarh Fort area is well-patrolled. The Blue City's narrow lanes are residential — you are walking through a neighbourhood, not an isolated tourist zone. Homestays in the old city are run by families, adding a layer of social safety that hotels cannot replicate.

8. Bikaner — Safety Rating 5/5

Full 4G everywhere. PBM Hospital is a solid government facility. Private hospitals available. SDRF Rajasthan covers the region.

Bikaner is the Rajasthan that most tourists skip, which means locals are genuinely curious rather than transactionally friendly. Junagarh Fort is staffed and secure. The camel research centre on the outskirts is one of those only-in-India experiences that works perfectly as a solo visit.

9. Bharatpur — Safety Rating 5/5

Full 4G on all carriers. District Hospital Bharatpur and RBM Hospital for medical needs. SDRF Rajasthan. 108 ambulance reliable.

Bharatpur is all about Keoladeo National Park. The park has rickshaw pullers who double as guides and an informal safety net — they know every visitor in the park at any given time. December is peak birding season at 5/5, and the park's flat terrain makes cycling through it alone one of the more peaceful experiences in Indian travel.

10. Sarnath — Safety Rating 5/5

Full 4G and 5G as part of the Varanasi urban area. Sarnath police station is 1 kilometre from the main site. BHU Hospital is 8 kilometres away and is an outstanding facility. Multiple private hospitals in Varanasi.

Sarnath is a Buddhist pilgrimage site, which means the crowd is meditative rather than manic. The archaeological museum and Dhamek Stupa complex are open, well-maintained, and staffed. Solo visits here feel contemplative, not concerning.

11. Landour — Safety Rating 5/5

Full network coverage as part of the Mussoorie network zone. Landour is essentially Mussoorie's quieter sister — same infrastructure, fewer people. The Landour bakehouse trail is one of the best solo walks in the Indian hills.

12. Jim Corbett National Park — Safety Rating 5/5

Full network in the buffer zones. Jio, Airtel, Vi, BSNL all operational. The park has its own medical facilities and the nearby town of Ramnagar has district-level hospitals.

Corbett is a managed national park. Jeep safaris are always accompanied by guides. Dhikala zone requires booking through the forest department, which means your presence is officially registered. December scores 5/5 — cold misty mornings, tiger activity up, elephants in herds.

13. Kurukshetra — Safety Rating 5/5

Full 4G. Kalpana Chawla Government Medical College plus Civil Hospital. SDRF Haryana. Well-connected by rail and road.

Kurukshetra is a pilgrimage and heritage city. The Brahma Sarovar complex is open and public. Solar eclipse festivals bring thousands. As a solo destination, it is overlooked but structurally sound — full connectivity, hospital access, and a cultural context where solo pilgrims are the norm, not the exception.

14. Devprayag — Safety Rating 5/5

Fair 4G. Jio, BSNL, and Airtel work (Vi does not). PHC Devprayag onsite. District Hospital Srinagar Garhwal is 30 kilometres away. SDRF Uttarakhand.

Devprayag is the confluence of Alaknanda and Bhagirathi — where the Ganges technically begins. It is a small town with a temple-town feel. Solo visitors are common here because it sits on the Char Dham route. The town is compact enough that you are never far from the main road.

15. Anandpur Sahib — Safety Rating 5/5

Full 4G coverage. Civil Hospital Anandpur Sahib onsite. SDRF Punjab. 108 ambulance reliable.

One of the five Takhts of Sikhism. The gurdwara complex is one of the most welcoming institutions in India for solo travelers of any gender or faith. Langar (free communal kitchen) means you will not go hungry. The Hola Mohalla festival is a spectacle of Sikh martial arts. As a solo destination, the social infrastructure of the gurdwara system provides a safety net that no hotel can match.

What These 15 Have in Common

Every destination on this list has: full 4G coverage on at least 3 carriers. A hospital within 30 kilometres (most within 10). A police station within the destination. A working 108 ambulance service. And a cultural context where solo visitors — specifically solo women — are not unusual.

We did not include destinations where the scenery is stunning but the phone signal drops to zero. We did not include places where the nearest hospital is 4 hours away. Infrastructure is not optional. It is the foundation of confidence.

What We Left Out (And Why)

Rishikesh scores high on safety but the adventure tourism sector creates scenarios (rafting, bungee, camping) where infrastructure matters less than operator quality. We rate it separately.

Goa has the infrastructure but the safety profile varies dramatically by specific beach and time of day. A blanket recommendation would be irresponsible.

Varanasi has 5/5 infrastructure but the density and intensity of the old city can be overwhelming for a first-time solo visitor. We recommend Sarnath as the entry point.

The data is specific. The recommendations should be too.
