If a comfortable base with reliable AC, a restaurant, and Taj-standard linens matters more than proximity, stay at Taj Ganges and make Sarnath a day trip. If you are in Sarnath for the 5:30am chanting at the Mulagandha Kuti Vihara or want to walk the archaeological zone before the tour groups arrive at 8am, the Taj base does not serve you—the guesthouses inside town do, and there is no mid-tier option between them and the Taj that is currently verified with sufficient documentation.
