The March story
Hola Mohalla is the reason Anandpur Sahib exists on any travel list, and it is genuinely extraordinary. Held the day after Holi (so mid-March usually), this three-day festival was started by Guru Gobind Singh in 1701 as an alternative to Holi — focused on martial valour, not colour. Nihang warriors in blue robes and towering turbans perform gatka (Sikh martial arts) on horseback, display weapons, and stage mock battles. Poets recite. Musicians perform kirtan. And the langar — organised by the Nihang dals — feeds hundreds of thousands of people for free over three days.
