Skiing in India: Auli vs Gulmarg — An Honest Comparison

# Skiing in India: Auli vs Gulmarg

India has two serious ski destinations. Both are in the Himalayas. Both have gondolas. One is in Uttarakhand, the other in Kashmir. They are completely different experiences.

Auli — The Accessible Option

**Altitude:** 2,500-3,050m. Slopes through oak and deodar forests.

**Season:** January-March. Best in February when snow cover is most consistent.

**Skill level:** Beginner to intermediate. The GMVN (government) ski school offers 7-day and 14-day courses. Rs 5,000-12,000 including equipment rental and instruction.

**Infrastructure:** Gondola from Joshimath (1,875m) to Auli (3,050m). GMVN ski resort at the top. Basic but functional accommodation. Equipment rental available on-site.

**The honest take:** Auli is a ski school, not a ski resort. The slopes are limited, the infrastructure is government-run (which means functional but not luxurious), and experienced skiers will exhaust the terrain in 2 days. But for learning to ski in India at a fraction of European prices, it is excellent.

Gulmarg — The Serious Destination

**Altitude:** 2,650-4,390m. The Gulmarg Gondola reaches Phase 2 at 3,980m — one of the highest cable cars in the world.

**Season:** December-March. Best in January-February for powder.

**Skill level:** Intermediate to expert. Phase 1 (Kongdoori) has groomed runs suitable for intermediates. Phase 2 (Apharwat Peak) is backcountry — ungroomed, avalanche-prone, guide-mandatory. This is where Gulmarg gets its international reputation.

**Infrastructure:** Hotels in Gulmarg town. Equipment rental from multiple operators. International-standard rental gear available. Heli-skiing operations run by private companies.

**The honest take:** Gulmarg is genuinely world-class for off-piste skiing. The powder quality in January rivals Colorado. But the backcountry is dangerous — avalanche risk is real and rescue infrastructure is limited. Do not go above Phase 1 without a certified guide and avalanche transceiver.
