Verinag in January
Jammu & Kashmir, India
January Verinag is cold Kashmir winter — 0-8°C. The octagonal Mughal spring — source of the Jhelum River, built by Jahangir in 1620 — sits in winter stillness. The spring water maintains its constant temperature regardless of season. The Mughal garden surrounding it is bare. The drive from Srinagar (80km, 2.5 hours via Anantnag) passes through winter-quiet Kashmir.
The January story
January Verinag is the Mughal spring without any mediation. The octagonal pool — built by Emperor Jahangir in 1620, who considered it the finest spring he had ever seen — is about 15 metres across, lined with stone arches, and so clear you can see the springs bubbling from the bottom. This is where the Jhelum River begins: a pool of crystal water that will flow 725km to become one of India's great rivers. Jahangir and Nur Jahan camped here repeatedly. The garden around it, while modest compared to Srinagar's Mughal gardens, has an intimacy they lack. January's winter emptiness lets you sit at the pool edge and watch the spring emerge without interruption. The JKTDC rest house (₹500-1,000) near the spring is basic but positioned. The drive from Anantnag (26km) passes through traditional Kashmiri villages. Hotels in Anantnag offer more options. January Verinag is a meditation on water, stone, and time.
