Verinag is the source of the Jhelum River — Kashmir's lifeline. The octagonal spring pool here was originally built by Mughal Emperor Jahangir in 1620, who considered it the most beautiful spring in Kashmir. The Mughal garden surrounding the spring is one of the finest examples of Mughal water architecture. The spring's deep blue waters emerge from an underground limestone cave and feed the river that sustains the entire Kashmir Valley.
Conservative dress recommended. Muslim-majority area — cover shoulders and knees. Women should carry a scarf.

Walk through a Mughal-era stone tunnel to the actual spring source — water gushing from living rock. Dark, cool, atmospheric.
Read the inscription tablet (or have your guide translate it) on the arcade wall — it is the construction record carved at completion of the octagonal tank and colonnade in 1620. Most "Mughal Gardens of Kashmir" UNESCO commentary cites this slab as the firmest dating for the entire complex. ASI ran a clean and minor consolidation in 2022.
Stand at the spring discharge — this is the geological start of the Jhelum (the Sanskrit Vitasta, Kashmiri Veth). Discharge is ~52 litres/second steady year-round from the limestone karst. From here the river runs north through Srinagar (Dal Lake fed by tributary), through Wular Lake, on through Baramulla, then crosses the LoC into Pakistan-administered Kashmir before joining the Chenab at Trimmu, Punjab.

Walking distance from the Mughal Garden — one of the few sit-down options in Verinag that travellers consistently rate highly. Family-run; the kitchen sticks to home-style Kashmiri preparations rather than tourist-menu compromises.
Tip: Lunch service is the safer bet — kitchens in this part of South Kashmir wind down early and dinner can be slow if you arrive after a tour-bus rush. Ask if trout is on; supply is intermittent.

The newer JKTDC-licensed unit at Verinag (separate from the older Tourist Bungalow) — quieter dining hall, broader menu including a vegetarian set if you're mixed-group. Walking distance to the octagonal pool and the Jhelum headwater point.
Tip: Order the trout fry over the rogan josh — they get their fish from the Kokernag farm 20km away, which is the freshest trout you'll find on this side of the valley. Skip the buffet on group-tour days; à la carte is faster.

One of the older roadside hotel-restaurants on the Verinag stretch — basic but reliable rajma-chawal and Kashmiri staples for a quick break before continuing south to Sinthan or back to Srinagar. JustDial average sits at 3.6/5, which in this part of the valley reads as 'honest workhorse'.
Tip: Order what's already cooking on the fire — the open kitchen at the entrance shows the morning's pot of rogan josh; it lands faster and tastes sharper than anything cooked-to-order.

The state tourism corporation's huts at Verinag run an in-house cook rather than a public-facing restaurant — meals are prepared on order for staying guests but the kitchen will usually serve walk-in day-trippers who pre-call. Inventory is whatever the cook bought that morning at Verinag chowk.
Tip: Phone the JKTDC Srinagar office (0194-2502274) the morning of your visit and ask the manager to pre-arrange lunch — the kitchen is cold otherwise and you'll wait 90 minutes for a fire.
Signature: Kashmiri kahwa and walnut cake
A small bazaar-side cafe useful for an afternoon break after the garden walk — kahwa is brewed fresh per pot (not the urn-warmed tourist version) and they carry the local walnut cake from a Anantnag-town bakery. Cash counter, plastic chairs, free hill view.
Tip: Order the kashmiri kulcha with kahwa — the cardamom-saffron bread is regional and works as a 4pm snack before the drive back to Srinagar or onward to Pahalgam.
