Raigad Fort in January
Maharashtra, India
Go January — peak Raigad, ropeway running, 1737-step climb viable, dry-light Sahyadri views.
Peak crowds
January is one of Raigad Fort's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Shivaji Jayanti (Feb 19) and weekends are packed. Weekdays you may have the fort to yourself. Monsoon — ropeway may close.
January is Raigad Fort at peak. The 820m hilltop fort where Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj was crowned on Jun 6, 1674 — founding the Maratha Empire — holds 12-25°C with humidity in the 40s, the ropeway runs 6am-7pm (₹250 RT, capacity 8-person cars), the 1737-step alternative climb is dry-grip and cool, and the summit plateau (royal court, Jagdishwar Temple, Takmak Tok cliff, Shivaji's samadhi) is in its clearest dry-season light. Mahad base village is 24km away via SH-104, the ropeway base another 5km. The fort's near-vertical Sahyadri cliffs make it one of the most spectacular UNESCO Maratha Military Landscapes (2012 nominated, 2024 inscribed) sites.
The January story
Drive 170km from Mumbai via NH-66 to Mahad — 4-5 hours, then 24km via SH-104 to Pachad base, then 5km to ropeway. From Pune 130km via Mahad — 4 hours. Ropeway: ₹250 RT, 6am-7pm operations, 8-person cars, 4-minute ride up the cliff face. Alternative: 1737-step climb from Pachad base — 2-3 hours up, 1.5-2 hours down, free entry. ASI fort entry ₹15. Inside: Shivaji's samadhi, the royal court (Maharad-darbar), Jagdishwar Temple, Takmak Tok (the execution cliff with 360° Sahyadri views), Mena Darwaza, the bazaar ruins. Allow 3-4 hours on summit. Stays: MTDC Raigad Resort Pachad ₹2200-4000/night, private homestays ₹1500-3000/night. Eat: Hotel Aagar at Pachad, local Maharashtrian thali at Mahad ₹150-300. Day-trip from Pune-Mumbai works; overnight at Pachad rewards dawn visit.
