Raigad Fort in March
Maharashtra, India
Go March early-morning only — last cool month, plan around dawn ropeway and sunset views.
March is Raigad Fort's shoulder month. Temperatures climb to 17-33°C with humidity at 55-60%, the ropeway runs full 6am-7pm hours, and the 1737-step alternative climb is workable but heat-tax accumulates past 10am. Pre-summer haze sets into the Sahyadri valleys, dulling the panoramic views from Takmak Tok and the summit plateau, and the summit basalt heats sharply by noon. The Maratha-heritage pilgrim flow from Shivaji Jayanti (Feb 19) has tapered. MTDC Raigad Resort at shoulder rates 15% below February peak. Holi falls Mar 3 — local Pachad village celebrates but it's not a Raigad-anchored festival.
The March story
Drive 170km from Mumbai via NH-66 to Mahad — 4-5 hours, then SH-104 to Pachad base + 5km to ropeway. From Pune 130km via Mahad 4 hours. Aim for ropeway 6am-9am window — the 4-minute ride lifts to the plateau before noon basalt heat. Alternative 1737-step climb only at dawn 5:30am-8am — afternoon climb genuinely exhausting in March heat. ASI fort ₹15. Allow 3-4 hours on summit before noon. Sunset 5:30pm-6:30pm ropeway works for those wanting evening light on Sahyadri ridges. Stays: MTDC Raigad Resort Pachad ₹2000-3500/night, private homestays ₹1500-3000/night at shoulder-rate. Eat: Hotel Aagar at Pachad, local Maharashtrian thali at Mahad. The structurally-right March visit is dawn ropeway with afternoon-AC retreat.
