Pahalgam in February
Jammu & Kashmir, India
Skip — Aru/Betaab/Chandanwari valleys snow-bound and access road limited; trout streams iced. Most hotels close. Better window: April–June and September–early November.
February keeps Pahalgam frozen and quiet. Snow depth may be at its maximum. The Lidder River section near town is sometimes used for informal ice activities. Temperatures: -6°C to 5°C. The town's winter routine continues. Some adventurous visitors try snow trekking on lower trails with local guides.
The February story
February Pahalgam is January's twin: deep snow, empty hotels, and the Lidder Valley looking like a Christmas card. The Mamaleshwara Temple, one of Kashmir's oldest Shiva shrines, is accessible year-round and sees devoted Kashmiri Hindu pilgrims even in winter. The town's pony-wallahs, who in summer ferry tourists to Betaab and Aru, spend February maintaining their horses and playing cricket on any flat snow-free patch. The local Kashmiri wazwan feast—seven-course meal centred on mutton—is at its richest in winter, when heavy food makes sense. If Betaab Valley road is plowed (ask locally), the snow valley is unforgettable. Hotel owners, happy for any guest, often upgrade rooms and add extras. February Pahalgam is a slow, cold, beautiful secret.
