Caution
Pahalgam in January
Jammu & Kashmir, India
January Pahalgam is Kashmir in its most dramatic winter form. The Lidder Valley is under deep snow. The river runs icy blue through white banks. At 2130m, temperatures plunge to -8°C to 4°C. The town, which in summer hosts 10,000+ tourists daily, has maybe 50 visitors. Pine forests are heavy with snow. The road from Srinagar (95 km) is open but requires caution.
The January story
Winter Pahalgam is a snow lover's paradise that most Indian tourists don't consider—they think Kashmir means summer meadows. The Lidder River, crystal clear and bordered by snow banks, is one of the most beautiful river walks in India in any season. Betaab Valley (7 km from town), named after the Bollywood film shot here, is blanketed in white—a vast snow field surrounded by pine forest and peaks. Aru Valley (12 km) may be accessible by 4x4, offering an even more pristine snow experience. Hotels in town operate at skeleton capacity with room rates 60-70% below summer peaks. The Kolahoi Glacier and Tarsar-Marsar lake treks are sealed by snow, but lower valley walks are spectacular. Kahwa (Kashmiri saffron-almond tea) in a warm hotel room overlooking the frozen valley is January Pahalgam's signature moment.
