Mangan is the headquarters of North Sikkim district and the town every traveller passes through on the way to Lachen, Lachung and Gurudongmar. It sits at about 955 m on the North Sikkim highway above the Teesta, and the surrounding hills are part of India's main large-cardamom belt. The monasteries of Phodong and Labrang lie just to the south.
