Why Special
Tsomgo (Changu) Lake is a glacial lake at 3,753m (12,313 ft) that changes color with the seasons โ deep blue in summer, frozen white in winter, and ringed by rhododendrons in spring. It is 40 km from Gangtok on the road to Nathula Pass (the India-China border crossing at 4,310m). The lake is sacred to the Bhutia community; they consider it an oracle โ locals read the water level and color to predict the coming year. Yak rides are available at the shore. Most visitors do this as a day trip from Gangtok, combined with Nathula if permits are arranged. A Protected Area Permit is required even for Indian citizens and must be arranged through a registered tour operator in Gangtok โ you cannot drive up independently. The road is steep and winding; altitude sickness affects some visitors.
