After the army built the New Baba Mandir near the Tsomgo shore in 1982, package tours drop the Old Mandir to save the 13km extra each way. The original bunker shrine sees a fraction of the footfall.WHY NOBODY KNOWS
The original 1968 shrine to Sepoy Harbhajan Singh, built into the bunker where his belongings were kept by his unit after his disappearance in the Nathula Pass area. The room is small, the army caretaker rotates by month, and the wall photographs run from 1968 onward. This is where the pilgrim story actually begins; the New Mandir is the tourist version.
