Kaza in May
Himachal Pradesh, India
May at Kaza is the pivot from winter access to summer access. Daytime climbs to 15-18C, nights still drop to -3 to 0C. The Manali-Spiti road via Atal Tunnel-Gramphu-Batal-Kunzum opens in the last week of May (the historical pattern: Kunzum Pass declared 4×4-only around May 24-26 in most recent years). The Shimla-Reckong Peo-Kaza road remains the more reliable approach until early June. Apricot fruit forms on the trees in Tabo and Sumdo. The full Spiti circuit — Tabo (Tabo Monastery, founded 996 CE, India's oldest continuously-functioning Buddhist monastery), Dhankar Monastery, Pin Valley with Mudh village, Key Monastery, Komic, Hikkim (the world's highest post office at 4,400m), Langza — all running. Acclimatisation matters: Kaza sits at 3,800m and the high villages run 4,400-4,600m. Carry diamox; oxygen rental at HP Tourism Kaza office costs around ₹500/day for serious AMS cases. Most homestays reopened. SBI ATM still unreliable; cash from Reckong Peo or Manali.
