WHY SPECIAL
Kaza is the administrative centre and logistics anchor for the entire Spiti Valley. Most itineraries from Manali or Shimla converge here. At 3,800m it's where you acclimatise, refuel, access the only reliable network signal in the valley, and stage day trips to Key Monastery, Hikkim (highest post office in the world), Langza (fossil village), and Komic. The town itself is small — a few hundred houses clustered around a central market — but the views of the surrounding 6,000m peaks are extraordinary.

ELEVATION
Kaza is the administrative centre and logistics anchor for the entire Spiti Valley. Most itineraries from Manali or Shimla converge here. At 3,800m it's where you acclimatise, refuel, access the only reliable network signal in the valley, and stage day trips to Key Monastery, Hikkim (highest post office in the world), Langza (fossil village), and Komic. The town itself is small — a few hundred houses clustered around a central market — but the views of the surrounding 6,000m peaks are extraordinary.

You develop a mild headache, nausea, dizziness or loss of appetite above roughly 2,500m within 6–24 hours of arrival.
Then
Stop ascending. Rest at the current altitude for 24–48 hours. Hydrate aggressively. If symptoms worsen or fail to improve, descend 500m and seek medical help. Never ascend further while symptomatic — HAPE and HACE kill quietly.

This is the default state in most border valleys, not an emergency. Carry at least ₹10,000 cash in mixed denominations for any trip above 2,500m or off a state highway. Withdraw at the LAST reliable ATM — usually the district HQ — because village ATMs are ornamental.

Manali 200km via Rohtang–Kunzum (12h, summer only) OR Shimla 410km via Hindustan–Tibet Highway (2 days, all-season except peak winter).
Road: Paved but narrow with landslide-prone sections between Rampur–Kinnaur and beyond Losar. Expect single-lane stretches and blind curves.
Public transport: HRTC buses: Shimla–Rekong Peo–Kaza daily (summer); Manali–Kaza via Rohtang runs Jun–Oct only.
Self-drive: 2WD possible in dry season on both routes. 4WD recommended Jun–Aug on Manali side. Carry spare tyre, jerry can, hardcopy permits.

KIDS · FAMILY READ
Altitude, cold, long drives, and limited medical access make Kaza unsuitable for young children. Teens in good health can manage it with pre-acclimatisation.
Spiti Valley HQ at 3,800m — Spiti Holiday Adventure + Zostel are female-safe. Village homestays (Komic, Langza) vetted. Don't drive solo in winter.

The 300-metre main street that carries every cafe, gear shop, money-changer, and SIM vendor in Spiti. Last reliable ATM before Tabo/Komic is here (SBI).

India Post operates a functioning post office here at 4,400m, widely regarded as the world's highest. You can mail a postcard from 'the highest post office' — postmark is the souvenir. Active since 1983.
A high village at 4,300m with a community-run homestay rotation — you never stay at the same family twice. Yak yogurt breakfast, handloom visits, and the quietest nights in Spiti. Ecosphere Spiti helped set this up.
At 4,587m, Komic is often cited as India's highest inhabited village reachable by road. Tangyud Monastery sits at the edge of the village with a 500-year-old wall painting collection. Population under 100 — you'll meet half the village at the single chai shop.

INFRASTRUCTURE · ON THE GROUND
Union taxis only — the Kaza Taxi Union sets rates which are posted at the stand. Full-day Key–Kibber: ₹3500. Langza–Hikkim–Komic loop: ₹4000. Kaza to Manali: ₹7500–9000 (one way). No Ola/Uber. Shared sumos to Tabo/Dhankar run in the mornings. Motorbike rentals available but you MUST have prior high-altitude experience.
Most homestays accept arrival from ~11am. Many close their doors and lights by 10pm — the town effectively sleeps. Foreigners require an Inner Line Permit if coming via the Kinnaur route (not required from the Manali/Kunzum direction, counterintuitive but true).
Mixed. Hotels and some restaurants on the main Kaza bazaar accept UPI when signal works (~60% of the time). Homestays and village villages (Langza, Hikkim, Komic) are cash-only. Carry ₹10,000+ per person for a 3-day trip. SBI Kaza has one ATM that works unreliably — do NOT rely on it.
One SBI ATM at Kaza that works roughly 70% of the time. Often out of cash on weekends and after long holidays. Withdraw in Manali or Reckong Peo before arrival.
Market is active 9am–7pm May–October. Winter months (Nov–Apr) most of Kaza shuts down — only a handful of homestays stay open for snow leopard season researchers.
Spitian (a Tibetan dialect) + Hindi are dominant. Most younger locals speak functional English. Older villagers in Langza/Hikkim/Komic speak only Spitian — but you won't need much language there.
BSNL and Jio both reach Kaza with variable 3G. Most homestays have Wi-Fi (satellite or microwave links) that works 50–80% of the time. Langza, Hikkim, Komic are effectively offline. Download offline Google Maps and anything else you need before leaving Kaza each morning.

Signature: seabuckthorn tea with handmade chocolate
Run by Spiti Ecosphere — a social enterprise where revenue funds community projects across 50+ Spiti villages. Started in 2012 by volunteers passionate about baking and coffee at 3,650m. The town's specialty-coffee anchor and the de-facto morning meeting point for trip leaders.
Tip: The seabuckthorn tea isn't a tourist gimmick — the berry is a local high-altitude superfood. Pair with a barley pancake; both ingredients are sourced from Spiti farmers via Ecosphere's network.
Signature: local-cooked momos
Banjara Camps were the first to set up tourist infrastructure in Spiti when the region opened in 1993. The 11-room Kaza retreat's dining hall feeds resident guests and pre-booked outsiders — local women come in to cook momos, the dal is typically Spitian rather than Punjabi.
Tip: Non-residents need to call ahead — kitchen runs on a fixed-menu system tied to occupancy. Worth it for the Spitian preparations you won't find at the bazaar cafes.

The most polished cafe in Kaza's main bazaar — local Spitian seating, hand-painted thangka murals on the interior walls, and an outdoor terrace that stays warm in the afternoon sun. 4.5 average across 688 reviews; rated #1 cafe in town on Tripadvisor.
Tip: The terrace fills up by 11am on clear days. If you're heading out to Komic or Hikkim, pre-order a sandwich at breakfast and pick it up on the way out — the kitchen will pack it.
Signature: yak cheese platter
'Zomsa' means 'meeting place' in Tibetan. Owner Bhavesh runs both kitchen and acoustic-set evenings — rustic wooden interiors, Tibetan design, the broadest fusion menu in town (Thai, Italian, Tibetan on one card). The Tripadvisor cafe rated #5 in Kaza with 4.6/5.
Tip: The live music is a real draw — most evenings see Bhavesh or visiting musicians on the small stage. Sit indoors after 7pm; the temperature drops 10°C the moment the sun goes.
Signature: yak cheese pizza
Tripadvisor Travelers' Choice 2017/2019/2021/2023 — the ground-floor cafe is famously busier than the hotel's restaurant. Eclectic decor, garden-cafe seating that catches the morning light, and the rare Kaza kitchen that handles continental properly.
Tip: The garden cafe opens earliest in town (7am) — get there before 8 if you're driving to Pin Valley or Chandratal that day. The yak-cheese pizza is unique to here; Deyzor sources directly from a Tashigang dairy.
Signature: in-house roasted Himalayan coffee
Founded in 2015 by Tenzin Dorje — a Spitian mountaineer — and pitched as the highest cafe in the Himalayas at 12,500ft. Roasts its own beans, traditional bukhari stove for cold evenings, a small travel library of regional guides and maps.
Tip: Ask Tenzin (or his team) for current trail conditions if you're headed to Pin-Parvati or Kanamo — the cafe doubles as an informal mountain-info desk. WiFi works on calm days only.

Family-run guesthouse
We recommend it because warm hosts, clean rooms, and home-cooked Spitian meals deliver far more character than the chain hotels at twice the price.
Tented camp
We recommend it because sleeping in heated mountain tents at 3,894 metres overlooking Dhankar fortress and the Spiti River gorge is how travellers remember Spiti.
Mid-range hotel
We recommend it for sitting directly on the main bazaar road within walking distance of Ki Gompa, the old town, and road-head supplies.
Heritage lodge
We recommend it for its restored traditional Spitian architecture, local artwork, and direct access to Kaza's monastery trails without the tourist sprawl.

FESTIVALS · BY THE MONTH
Monks at Key Monastery (near Kaza) perform chaam — sacred masked dances — over 2 days. The masks represent Guru Padmasambhava's eight manifestations. Visitors welcome; silence during performances.
Historic trade fair that once drew traders from Tibet, Ladakh and Kinnaur. Now a 3-day cultural festival at Kaza with archery, chaam mask dances, and a wool-barter market.
Start at Key Monastery (12km, 20 min drive) — the iconic Spiti postcard view of the monastery perched above the valley. Arrive by 8am for soft light and before tour buses.
Drive up to Hikkim (14,400 feet) for the world's highest post office — buy postcards, get the stamp, genuinely send one home. Then Langza (12km) for the Buddha statue + Jurassic-era marine fossils scattered in loose scree.
Loop back via Komic (world's highest motorable village) — lunch at Komic Monastery's basic kitchen. Return to Kaza by 4pm, rest — altitude fatigue will hit.
Stroll Kaza market. Pick up peas + barley bread at a local dhaba. Early night. You've covered 60km of 3600m+ terrain and your body is working hard.
If weather turns
Dust storms and sudden snow happen even in peak summer. Fallback: Key Monastery alone (shortest drive), then return to Kaza for a Sakya Tangyud Monastery visit + market day. Do not attempt Langza/Hikkim in fresh snow — the roads have no guard rails.

Acceptable with kids 10+, NOT recommended under 10. The problem is altitude, not logistics. A 3800m base + day trips to 4500m+ villages is above the threshold where some kids develop AMS. Homestays are family-warm and happy to feed picky eaters. If you come, plan a mandatory day-of-arrival rest day.
Best for
If you've done Manali, Leh is the next logical high-altitude step but intimidating. Spiti (Kaza) is arguably a better ladder — equally dramatic landscapes, less commercial, genuinely Buddhist, more forgiving road access.
Best for
Spiti has some of the darkest skies in India. No city glow, no monsoon haze (a rain-shadow desert), 300+ clear nights a year. Komic and Langza deliver milky-way frames rivaling Atacama.
Best for
Key, Tabo, Dhankar, Komic Tangyud — five distinct Gelugpa / Sakya / Nyingma monasteries within a day's drive. Tabo especially: UNESCO tentative, 1000+ years old, frescoes in active worship.
Best for
Kaza is the acclimatization + refuel + decompress anchor. You'll spend 2–3 nights here on any serious Manali-Kunzum-Spiti-Kinnaur loop.
