Peak Season
Barot Valley in May
Himachal Pradesh, India
May warms Barot to a comfortable 15-28°C while the Punjab plains below bake at 45°C. Families from Chandigarh and Mandi discover this valley. The campgrounds fill. The trout hatchery sees peak visitors. The Uhl river's crystal pools invite brave swimmers.
The May story
May is Barot's busiest month as plains families flee the heat. The campgrounds fill on weekends (book weekday for peace), the trout hatchery gets tour-group attention, and the river pools have swimmers. Despite increased numbers, Barot never feels crowded the way Manali or Kasol do — the valley is long and narrow, dispersing people naturally. The rail-track walk remains beautiful and mostly uncrowded on weekday mornings. Trout fishing is in full season: early morning and late evening casts on the Uhl produce good results. The surrounding forest is in full canopy, making wildlife harder to spot but birding excellent — Himalayan monal, koklass pheasant, and various warblers. May is when Barot works for families: warm enough for river play, cool enough for forest walks, and enough food options (homestays, a couple of basic restaurants) to keep everyone fed.
