Kaza in December
Himachal Pradesh, India
Skip — Kunzum La (Manali-Spiti road) closes mid-Oct to mid-May; Kinnaur route via Reckong Peo is the only access and treacherous Dec–Feb (BRO blocks slope-segments). Spiti drops to -25°C; homestays burn 8hr/day on heating just to keep water unfrozen. Better window: May–October.
December at Kaza is when the Spiti winter shutdown begins in earnest. Daytime peaks at -1 to 0C, nights drop to -18 to -22C. The Manali approach is firmly closed (and remains so until late May). The Shimla-Reckong Peo-Kaza road takes 1-3 multi-day closures across the month, the Nako-Kaza stretch (Shichilling below Dhankar) being the chokepoint. HRTC bus runs the Shimla-Kaza route when the road is clear. Hotel Sakya, Hotel Deyzor and Spiti Sarai stay open through winter. Most village homestays closed. The Kibber snow leopard tracking season is at peak booking; operators (Spiti Ecosphere, Snow Leopard Trust India partners) run 8-10 day expeditions, success rate 70-80 percent on sightings. Key Monastery and Tabo Monastery open but the road around Tabo gets icy. BSNL holds; Jio works only intermittently. SBI ATM unreliable — cash from Reckong Peo essential. Bukhari heating in hotel rooms is non-negotiable; even mid-day room temperatures struggle to hold above 8C without it.
