Shimla in February
Himachal Pradesh, India
Go in February—Shimla delivers reliable snow, open ski slopes at Kufri, and clear daytime visibility, though nights drop to 0°C and roads occasionally close after heavy falls.
February Shimla holds winter but starts hinting at spring. Temperatures range from -1°C to 10°C. Snow still falls — usually 2-3 episodes through the month — but it melts faster at lower elevations than January. Kufri maintains snow cover for skiing and sledding. The Ridge gets a Valentine's Day crowd surge (mostly Chandigarh and Delhi couples) that fills hotels mid-month, but weekdays remain quiet. The Kalka-Shimla toy train runs without disruption and February light through the pine forests is excellent. NH-5 improves over January but early-morning ice patches persist above Solan.
The February story
February is underrated Shimla. You get winter atmosphere — log fires, woolens, hot soup at Baljees on Mall Road — without January's severity. Christ Church and the State Library building look sharp against clearing skies with occasional snow-capped backdrops. The Shimla Heritage Walk (organized by INTACH, Saturday mornings) runs through the colonial core: Gorton Castle, Auckland House, Peterhof — these buildings tell the story of a town that literally ran British India for six months every year. Kufri snow activities continue, though quality dips in the second half as melt starts. The Glen and Chadwick Falls trails (both within 4 km of Mall Road) are doable — muddy but scenic with good winter-forest atmosphere. Annandale (the old British cricket ground) is accessible for walks. Room rates spike only on Valentine's weekend — otherwise 20-30% below May prices. IGMC Hospital maintains full services. The Indian Coffee House on Mall Road has been serving the same filter coffee since 1957 — it's a time capsule worth visiting. Power cuts less frequent than January but still possible during snowfall.
