Chakrata in May
Uttarakhand, India
Go in May—all trails open, temperatures mild, and zero crowds let you move freely through forests and caves without jostling.
Peak crowds
May is one of Chakrata's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Rarely crowded — Dehradun locals come on weekends but never packed.
May pushes Chakrata to 28-30°C on warm afternoons, which still feels like air conditioning compared to the 44°C baking the plains below. The forests are at peak density, waterfalls run full, and this is when Dehradun families discover the place exists. Book ahead.
The May story
Tiger Falls becomes genuinely dramatic — the pool at the base is swimmable (cold, but swimmable) and the 20-metre cascade throws mist across the trail. Evenings cool to 15°C, perfect for bonfires at Budher camp. The Chakrata-Tyuni road opens fully, connecting you to deeper Jaunsar-Bawar villages where traditional Jaunsari culture survives almost untouched. Try kachmauli (a local leaf-wrapped preparation) at any village dhaba. Rooms hit peak rates (₹1,500-3,000/night) and some homestays are fully booked on weekends by April.
