Auli in March
Uttarakhand, India
Go early March for late-season skiing and clear gondola views, but expect soft slopes by midday and prepare for freezing mornings.
Peak crowds
March is one of Auli's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Ski season Dec-Mar gets crowded. Limited accommodation — book 2-3 weeks ahead in peak winter.
March is the farewell of ski season. Snow begins softening, but the slopes remain skiable into mid-month. The days are longer and warmer, making it the most comfortable month for skiing novices. By late March, the meadows start emerging from snow — patches of green through white.
The March story
March is the Goldilocks month for nervous skiers. The snow is softer (more forgiving on falls), the days are longer (more skiing hours), and the temperatures are milder (-2 to 8°C). The GMVN course still runs through mid-March. Late March brings a magical transition: snow receding to reveal green meadow beneath, streams appearing from snowmelt, and the first birds returning to altitude. The cable car operates through the month. Joshimath, at lower altitude, is properly spring-like — comfortable walking, open restaurants, and the ancient Narsingh Temple worth a visit. If you want skiing without the deep-winter commitment, March is your month. If you want the transition between winter and spring that only mountains offer, March is even more your month.
