Ellora Caves in January
Maharashtra, India
Go January — peak Ellora window, Cave 16 Kailasa at best photographic light, full 34-cave circuit comfortable.
Peak crowds
January is one of Ellora Caves's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. CLOSED TUESDAYS. Weekends can be crowded. Start early morning to beat the heat.
January at Ellora is peak window — 12-28°C, dry Deccan plateau air, the 34 rock-cut caves (Cave 1-12 Buddhist, Cave 13-29 Hindu, Cave 30-34 Jain, spanning 6th-11th centuries CE) carved into the Charanandri Hills at peak comfort. Cave 16 — the Kailasa Temple — is the world's largest monolithic excavation, carved top-down from a single basalt cliff by the Rashtrakuta king Krishna I (8th c CE), an entire Shiva temple with elephants, lions, courtyard, gopuram, and shikhara cut from one rock. UNESCO 1983. Closed Tuesday (NOT Monday like Ajanta).
The January story
Aurangabad 30 km away as base — leave 8am, on-site by 9am opening. ASI ticket ₹40 Indian / ₹600 foreign (no shuttle, parking right at entry). Allow 5-6 hours minimum for full 34-cave circuit. Start at Cave 16 Kailasa first (the showstopper, plan 90 min minimum), then walk the Buddhist sequence (Cave 1-12), then Hindu (Cave 13-29 including Ramayana panels at Cave 14 Ravan-ki-Khai and Cave 15 Dashavatara), then Jain (Cave 30-34 Indra Sabha). Cave 16 Kailasa: largest monolithic structure in the world — twice the size of the Parthenon, took 100+ years and 7,000 workers carving downward through 200,000 tons of basalt. Photography: morning light on Kailasa's east-facing facade is the iconic shot 9-10:30am. Strong torch useful for Cave 1, 5, 10 (Vishwakarma — Buddhist chaitya) and Cave 16 interior chambers. ASI guides ₹500-800 for half-day. Combine with Daulatabad 17 km away on same day or split into 2 days. Closed Tuesday — plan for Wed-Mon. Hotels: Vivanta by Taj, Welcomhotel Rama, Lemon Tree in Aurangabad. Cave temperatures 18-22°C cool inside.
