Ellora Caves in February
Maharashtra, India
Go February — peak window holds, Cave 16 Kailasa at best light, full 34-cave circuit ideal.
Peak crowds
February is one of Ellora Caves's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. CLOSED TUESDAYS. Weekends can be crowded. Start early morning to beat the heat.
February at Ellora continues the January peak — 14-30°C, dry post-winter Deccan, the 34 rock-cut caves on the Charanandri Hills at peak walking comfort. Cave 16 Kailasa Temple — the world's largest monolithic excavation, top-down carved 8th c CE Rashtrakuta Krishna I — at its photographic best in clear dry-air conditions. The Buddhist (1-12), Hindu (13-29), and Jain (30-34) sequences each tell their architectural story. UNESCO 1983. Closed Tuesday.
The February story
Continue January's circuit — Aurangabad 30 km base, leave 8am, on-site 9am for ASI opening. Ticket ₹40 Indian / ₹600 foreign. No shuttle needed (parking at entry). Plan 5-6 hours. Cave 16 Kailasa as opening 90-min stop — east-facing facade in best morning light 9-10:30am. Walk Buddhist sequence (Cave 1-12) including Cave 10 Vishwakarma (chaitya with rib-vaulted ceiling, the only Buddhist prayer hall at Ellora). Hindu sequence (Cave 13-29) — Cave 14 Ravan-ki-Khai (Ramayana panels), Cave 15 Dashavatara (10 incarnations of Vishnu carved), Cave 21 Rameshwara, Cave 29 Dhumar Lena (Trimurti). Jain (Cave 30-34) — Cave 32 Indra Sabha with intricately carved ceiling and central pillared hall. Lunch at gate canteen 1pm. Combine with Daulatabad 17 km away on same day or split. Hotels at peak. Photography: Feb morning light on Kailasa's yellow-grey basalt facade is the year's best. Shivaji Jayanti Feb 19 brings small Maratha-cultural energy to Aurangabad-base.
