Ellora Caves in July
Maharashtra, India
Skip July unless atmospheric-photography focused — Nov-Feb the better full-circuit window.
July at Ellora is full Deccan monsoon — 22-29°C, 200-300mm rainfall, daily rain bursts, the Kailasa courtyard (sun-trap design) becomes a rain-pool briefly during heavy bursts, basalt cave-floor stones slippery throughout the 34-cave circuit. Cave interiors stay cool and mostly dry (face inward into the cliff); the Buddhist Cave 10 Vishwakarma chaitya rib-vault ceiling becomes atmospheric in dim monsoon light. Hindu Cave 14, 15, 16, 21, 29 panels viewable. Closed Tuesday.
The July story
Time visit to mid-July dry-day cluster forecasts (3-4 dry days). The monsoon light at Kailasa's east-facing facade — when sun briefly breaks through monsoon clouds — is atmospheric and rare. Cave-interior photography (Cave 10 Vishwakarma chaitya, Cave 16 Kailasa interior chambers) works with strong flashlight. ASI ticket ₹40 Indian / ₹600 foreign. No shuttle (parking right at entry). Aurangabad 30 km as base — Vivanta, Welcomhotel, Lemon Tree at monsoon-shoulder rates. Carry waterproof grippy shoes — wet basalt is the main risk. Driving NH-211 between Aurangabad and Ellora needs daylight + caution. ASI hours 9am-5:30pm. Combine with Daulatabad 13 km from Aurangabad only on 2-3 dry-day cluster — wet basalt steps and dark tunnel flooding make Daulatabad genuinely dangerous in July. Hotel: book Vivanta or Welcomhotel 7-10 days ahead for moderate pricing. Food: gate canteen, plus naan-qalia at Aurangabad's Bhoj.
