Go February — best month for Elephanta if you time the MTDC Festival, ferry running clean.
Peak crowds
February is one of Elephanta Caves's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. Elephanta Festival in February is excellent. Weekends can have long ferry queues. Closed during monsoon.
February is the festival month at Elephanta. MTDC organises the annual Elephanta Festival — typically a mid-February two-night classical music and dance series staged at the cave entrance with the 6m Trimurti as backdrop. Dates and the year's lineup are announced 4-6 weeks in advance on MTDC channels. Beyond the festival: the harbour weather is identical to January — 19-30°C, glass-calm sea, ferries running 9:30am to 2pm departures and last return 5:30pm. The basalt cave interiors stay cool against an outside path that begins to heat up by 1pm.
The February story
For the festival: check the MTDC website 4 weeks ahead for exact dates — Elephanta Festival usually mid-Feb 2-night programme. Festival evenings have separate boat schedules — special launches return after 9pm. Tickets ₹500-1500 typical, sold through MTDC and BookMyShow. For a regular Elephanta day: 9:30am ferry from Gateway (₹190 RT first-class + ₹40 entry + ₹600 foreign-tourist ASI), 5-hour round trip. Trimurti morning light 10:30am-11:30am. Cave 1 plus caves 4-7 visit takes about 2.5 hours. Wear grippy shoes for the 120 step climb. Carry water — island canteen is basic. Combine with a Fort heritage walk on the same Mumbai day. Hotels back at peak pricing — Mumbai stay rates 30-40% above May.
