Elephanta Caves in April
Maharashtra, India
Wait April — last 30 days before Sep 15 shutdown but heat punishes; postpone to October-February.
April is the last gasp before Elephanta closes. The MMB rule shuts the Gateway-Elephanta ferry from Apr 30 to roughly Sep 15, but the heat has already made April uncomfortable: 26-35°C with humidity climbing into the 70s, the basalt plateau holding heat from 9am onward, and the 120-step climb up from the jetty becoming a slog rather than the manageable warm-up it is in winter. Crowds collapse — most visitors who try arrive at 10am, struggle with the heat by 11:30am, and rush back to the 12:45pm ferry exhausted. The Trimurti is still spectacular at any temperature, but the experience around it is degraded.
The April story
If April is your only option: take the 9:30am ferry from Gateway, no later. Aim to be in Cave 1 by 11am, exit the caves by 12:15pm, and on the 12:45pm or 1:45pm return launch — last departure off the island is around 5:30pm but you don't want to be on the plateau after 2pm in April. Carry 2-3L of water — canteen overcharged and basic, and dehydration risk is real. ₹190 RT first-class + ₹40 island entry + ₹600 ASI foreign-tourist. Grippy shoes essential. Better answer: postpone. Elephanta will fully shut for ferry from Apr 30 anyway. Plan return for October or any window between November and February — the experience changes from a heat-endurance test to a heritage pleasure.
