Elephanta Caves in September
Maharashtra, India
Wait September — ferry-restart uncertain mid-month, postpone to October for guaranteed access.
September is the transition month at Elephanta. The MMB targets a mid-September ferry restart — Sep 15 is the typical aim — but the actual restart depends on Arabian Sea swell, which often takes another week or two to settle below the 1.5m operational threshold for the Gateway-Elephanta route. In 2025 the ferry only ran fully from Sep 22 onward, and 2026 expectations are similar. Compounding this: Ganesh Chaturthi Sep 12-22 brings massive Gateway-area crowds and visarjan disruptions, with Marine Drive and the harbour edge closed to non-festival traffic on Sep 22.
The September story
Don't plan a September Elephanta visit before Sep 25. The first half of the month the ferry is officially off; the second half is restart-uncertain; Sep 12-22 Ganesh Chaturthi crowds and Anant Chaturdashi visarjan (Sep 22) lock down Gateway. If you're in Mumbai for the festival, skip Elephanta entirely and channel into Ganesh Chaturthi pandals (Lalbaughcha Raja, GSB Wadala, Khetwadi 11). If you arrive Sep 26-30 and the MMB has confirmed full ferry-restart: ride the 9:30am launch from Gateway (₹190 RT first-class + ₹40 entry + ₹600 ASI foreign), expect the harbour still slightly choppy, and the cave plateau lush green but slippery in places. Better answer: postpone to October. The Trimurti and Cave 1 will be at their best from Oct 1 onward when both ferry and weather are reliably good.
