Elephanta Caves in May
Maharashtra, India
Skip May — ferry officially suspended Apr 30 to mid-September, Elephanta off-season.
May is when Elephanta closes for the monsoon season. The MMB has formally suspended the Gateway-Elephanta ferry from Apr 30 — no MTDC or private launches operate on the scheduled route through to mid-September. The Arabian Sea pre-monsoon swell rises through May; even if a stray fisherman's boat could run the route, the heat (30-36°C on the basalt plateau, 75%+ humidity) and the climb (120 stair steps to the cave plateau) make any attempt structurally wrong. The island is officially off-limits for tourist visits, the ASI office at the cave entrance operates skeleton staffing, and the caves themselves are not maintained for monsoon visitor-flow.
The May story
Don't plan an Elephanta visit in May. The ferry is officially off Apr 30 to ~Sep 15. Even if a private boatman in Mandwa offers — refuse: pre-monsoon seas can shift in hours, and the return run becomes a safety risk. Save the Elephanta day for an October-February window when the harbour is glass-calm, the ferry runs full schedule (9:30am-2pm departures), and the Trimurti and Cave 1 panels are at their visual best. If you're in Mumbai in May for another reason: Mumbai itself is broiling (see Mumbai/May notes), but indoor heritage substitutes — Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (formerly Prince of Wales Museum), Bhau Daji Lad Museum, the National Gallery of Modern Art at Regal Circle — give you 5th-7th century Indian art in air-conditioning. Save Elephanta for November.
