Caution
Barot Valley in February
Himachal Pradesh, India
February is still deep winter in Barot. Snow may dust the higher ridges above the valley. The trout hatchery operates year-round (the fish don't care about temperature), and the few homestays that stay open serve warming Himachali meals by wood fire.
The February story
February Barot is for the patient. The valley is still cold, but sunny afternoons can push to 12°C — enough to walk the rail track comfortably if dressed properly. The track runs 12km from Barot to the tunnel intake, passing through forest, over small bridges, and along cliff edges with views of the Uhl valley below. In February, the river is at its clearest — you can see trout holding in deep pools. The hatchery is a 20-minute walk from the village and houses both rainbow and brown trout in various growth stages. The Shanan powerhouse (at the other end, in Joginder Nagar) is one of Asia's oldest functioning hydroelectric plants and can be visited. February homestay rates in Barot are 30-50% below summer prices. The hosts have time to cook slowly and talk. If you want to understand Himachali valley life without the tourist circus, February delivers.
