Barot Valley in April
Himachal Pradesh, India
Go in April—peak season with perfect 10–22°C range, lush green forests, open wildlife trails, and river conditions ideal for fishing with minimal crowds.
April is when Barot remembers it's beautiful. Wildflowers, green hillsides, the Uhl running strong, and the colonial railway infrastructure looking picturesque against spring forest. Trout fishing season opens (check HP Forest Department regulations). Temperatures: 10-22°C.
The April story
April Barot is the valley at its most inviting. The apple orchards blossom, the river pools warm just enough for the bravest swimmers, and the rail-track walk is at perfect-weather conditions. Trout fishing opens — HP Forest Department issues daily permits, and the Uhl is one of India's best trout streams. The fish are wild (supplemented by hatchery stock), and the setting — fly-fishing in a deodar valley with snow peaks visible upstream — is extraordinary. The camping grounds at Barot and along the Uhl are operational: riverside sites that are genuinely beautiful. The Nargu sanctuary is active with spring wildlife. April is also when the tunnel-end trek (following the water channel from the Uhl intake to the Shanan powerhouse viewpoint) becomes accessible. It's a remarkable piece of colonial engineering in a spectacular natural setting. April gives you everything Barot has. Four days is ideal.
