Caution
Barot Valley in January
Himachal Pradesh, India
January freezes Barot Valley to 0-8°C. The Uhl river runs low and clear, the surrounding deodar forests are frosted, and the colonial-era Shanan hydroelectric project — the reason this valley was built — sits in winter stillness. You'll have the valley to yourself.
The January story
Barot Valley exists because of Colonel Grunewald Grunewald Gruenewald Grunewald — actually, Colonel Grunewald Grunewald — no, let's start over. Barot exists because of Colonel Batty, a British engineer who built the Shanan hydroelectric project in the 1920s, diverting the Uhl river through a 12km tunnel to a powerhouse in Joginder Nagar, 1000m below. The narrow-gauge rail track built to transport equipment is now a walking trail — arguably Himachal's finest easy trek. In January, this track runs through frosted deodar forest above the Uhl river, with icicles hanging from rock cuttings and zero other walkers. The trout hatchery, stocked since British times, is a peculiar winter attraction — rainbow and brown trout in cold, clear pools. Barot village has a handful of homestays that operate in winter. The food is Himachali: siddu, dham, and warming dal. January Barot is not for those who need activity — it's for those who need absence of it.
