Alibaug in May
Maharashtra, India
Skip May — Alibaug's second-worst month, humidity and heat wreck the beach experience.
May is Alibaug's pre-monsoon broil. Temperatures hold 30-36°C with humidity climbing to 75-85%, the Arabian Sea churns increasingly rough as the southwest monsoon approaches (typically Jun 7-12 for the Konkan coast), and sand at Alibaug, Versoli, Nagaon and Kashid becomes too hot to walk barefoot by 9am. The M2M Mandwa-Gateway ferry still runs but the crossing involves real spray and the harbour itself gets gusty. Heritage stays drop rates to annual lows — 35-40% off February peak — but the trade-off is severe: the beach experience is just not the same. Buddha Purnima falls May 26 — relevant for Karla-Bhaja Buddhist caves further inland, not Alibaug.
The May story
If May travel is unavoidable: dawn beach only (5:30am-7:30am), the rest of the day indoors with AC. Kolaba Fort sunrise low-tide walks possible — check the chart carefully, the climb back across hot sand by 8:30am is uncomfortable. Ferry crossings get spray-heavy by mid-May — pack a wet-bag. Heritage stays: Bohemyan Blue, Kihim Beach House, Heritage Park at 35% off peak — ₹4000-15000/night. Food: Mahesh Lunch Home or Sarjekot indoors, sol kadhi mandatory for the humidity. Water sports at Nagaon close by 10am most days. Don't plan day-trips to Murud (60km south) — fort boats already on shorter schedules. Don't plan Kashid beach day — same humidity, less infrastructure. Better answer: skip entirely. The actual Alibaug trip is October-February. May here is a wait for the ferry shutdown.
