Ajanta Caves in February
Maharashtra, India
Go February — peak Ajanta window holds, full 30 caves comfortable, painted-mural light good.
Peak crowds
February is one of Ajanta Caves's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. CLOSED MONDAYS. Weekends and school holidays can be crowded. Best light for paintings is morning.
February at Ajanta continues the January peak — 14-30°C, dry Deccan plateau, the horseshoe-shaped cliff above the Waghora River clear all day. The 30 rock-cut Buddhist caves (2nd c BCE to 6th c CE), discovered 1819 by John Smith of the Madras Army on a tiger hunt, UNESCO-listed 1983 — at peak walking comfort with crowds thinning slightly from December's end-of-year rush. Painted interiors at Cave 1 (Bodhisattva Padmapani), Cave 2, Cave 16, Cave 17 (vast Jataka-tale ceiling murals), Cave 26 (Mahaparinirvana reclining Buddha 7.3m long) — all in good low-humidity preservation light.
The February story
February repeats January's circuit — base in Aurangabad (100 km away), leave 6:30am, ASI ticket ₹40 Indian / ₹600 foreign + ₹40 mandatory eco-shuttle (4 km from gate). Closed Monday weekly. Plan Tue-Sun visit. ASI hours 9am-5:30pm. Allow 5-6 hours minimum for full 30-cave walkthrough. Use strong torch for Cave 1, 2, 16, 17, 26 painted interiors. The horseshoe-canyon viewpoint at the far end of the gorge — a 15-min climb — gives the best photograph of the cliff complex (this is where John Smith first saw the caves from across the river). ASI guides ₹500-800 for half-day, well worth for first-timers. Aurangabad return drive 100 km — NH-211 in good condition 2.5 hr. Hotels: Vivanta by Taj, Welcomhotel Rama, Lemon Tree at Aurangabad shoulder-to-peak rates; book 30+ days. Food: lunch at gate canteen or carry packed; no food/drink in caves. Cave temperatures inside stay cool 18-22°C even when exterior warms.
