Ajanta Caves in December
Maharashtra, India
Go December — year's clearest air, full 30-cave circuit, horseshoe canyon at absolute peak.
Peak crowds
December is one of Ajanta Caves's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. CLOSED MONDAYS. Weekends and school holidays can be crowded. Best light for paintings is morning.
December at Ajanta is the year's clearest cave-day — 11-28°C, dry Deccan plateau air at peak transparency, the horseshoe cliff above the Waghora River carved out against a deep-blue sky. The 30 rock-cut Buddhist caves (2nd c BCE - 6th c CE) at peak walking comfort, the painted interiors (Cave 1 Bodhisattva Padmapani, Cave 17 Jataka-tale ceilings, Cave 26 Mahaparinirvana) in best low-humidity preservation conditions. Christmas through New Year's Eve brings heritage-focused family arrivals from Mumbai, Pune, Delhi, Hyderabad — Aurangabad hotels (Vivanta by Taj, Welcomhotel Rama) at year-peak pricing. Ellora Festival tail can extend into the first week. Closed Monday.
