Ajanta Caves in October
Maharashtra, India
Go October — window reopens, full 30-cave circuit, peak walking conditions, post-monsoon air clear.
Peak crowds
October is one of Ajanta Caves's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. CLOSED MONDAYS. Weekends and school holidays can be crowded. Best light for paintings is morning.
October at Ajanta is the heritage window returning — 19-32°C, dry post-monsoon Deccan, the 30 Buddhist caves cut into the horseshoe-shaped cliff above the Waghora River at peak walking conditions. The 3-4 km cliff-trail dry and firm; painted interiors at Cave 1 (Bodhisattva Padmapani), Cave 2, Cave 16, Cave 17 (Jataka ceilings), Cave 26 (Mahaparinirvana) all in excellent low-humidity preservation light. Tourist numbers building from the September lull. Closed Monday. ASI hours 9am-5:30pm.
The October story
October opens the prime Ajanta window — 6 months (Oct-Mar) of comfortable cave-circuit conditions. Aurangabad 100 km away as base — leave 6:30am, gate at 8:30am, on-site at opening, 5-6 hours minimum for full circuit. ASI ticket ₹40 Indian / ₹600 foreign + ₹40 mandatory eco-shuttle (4 km from gate to cave entry). Start at Cave 1, work through 30 caves, climb to horseshoe-canyon viewpoint, lunch at gate canteen, return drive to Aurangabad. Painted-mural interior strong torch essential. ASI guides ₹500-800 for half-day. Hotels rates climbing toward Nov-Feb peak — Vivanta by Taj, Welcomhotel Rama, Lemon Tree all moving back to mid-pricing through the month. Trains 22221 Rajdhani via Manmad Junction reliable; flights from Mumbai 45 min. Food: gate canteen, plus naan-qalia at Aurangabad's Bhoj, dum biryani at Madina. Driving NH-211 in good condition 2.5 hr from Aurangabad. Photography: post-monsoon clarity excellent for horseshoe-canyon panorama.
