Ajanta Caves in November
Maharashtra, India
Go November — peak window, full 30-cave circuit, horseshoe canyon at best.
Peak crowds
November is one of Ajanta Caves's busiest months. The score rates conditions — weather, access, value — not how many people you'll share them with. CLOSED MONDAYS. Weekends and school holidays can be crowded. Best light for paintings is morning.
November at Ajanta is full heritage peak — 14-30°C, dry post-monsoon Deccan air, clear visibility for the horseshoe-shaped cliff above the Waghora River, the 30 Buddhist rock-cut caves at peak comfort. The 3-4 km cliff-trail dry; painted murals at Cave 1 (Padmapani), Cave 2, Cave 16, Cave 17 (Jataka ceiling), Cave 26 (Mahaparinirvana 7.3m reclining Buddha) all in low-humidity preservation conditions. Tourist numbers building through the month — Diwali Nov 8 brings family-tourism arrivals from Mumbai, Pune, Delhi. The Ellora Festival (late November - early December) at the sister-site 130 km away pulls cultural-tourism crowds.
The November story
November is textbook Ajanta — book Aurangabad-base circuit 30+ days ahead. Vivanta by Taj, Welcomhotel Rama, Lemon Tree, MTDC Holiday Resort all rising to mid-to-peak rates. Leave Aurangabad 6:30am, gate at 8:30am for opening. ASI ticket ₹40 Indian / ₹600 foreign + ₹40 mandatory eco-shuttle (4 km gate-to-caves). Full circuit 5-6 hours: Cave 1 → Cave 2 → Cave 9-10 (earliest Hinayana chaityas) → Cave 16 (Mahayana vihara) → Cave 17 (vast Jataka ceiling) → Cave 19 (chaitya facade) → Cave 26 (Mahaparinirvana). Climb horseshoe-canyon viewpoint at gorge far end for the photograph John Smith saw in 1819. Lunch at gate canteen 1pm. Return drive 100 km via NH-211 — 2.5 hr in clear conditions. Photography: November clear-sky horseshoe-canyon panorama is the iconic shot. Time Diwali Nov 8 if combining with Sambhajinagar old-city diya walks. ASI guides ₹500-800 for half-day, recommended for first-timers. Cave temperatures inside 18-22°C — light scarf for entry from 28-30°C exterior.
