Where the road ends and the sky begins

Cold-desert union territory at 3,000–5,500 m, where Buddhist monasteries sit on cliffs above the Indus and roads close half the year. Leh is the standard arrival point; Pangong and Tso Moriri are the tourist-trail high lakes; Nubra reaches up to Khardung La and Turtuk; Zanskar opens by July and ices over by October; Umlingla is the world's highest motorable road. Permits required for most of the region. AMS is a real risk above 3,500 m — acclimatise two days in Leh before going higher. 14 destinations across the state.
