The stay decisions worth flagging in Kargil.
Kargil is a highway town, not a destination resort. Every property here sits in the ₹2.5–7k band—no international chains, no lake-palace comparisons. April means the Srinagar–Leh highway has just reopened post-winter and traffic is light, but nights remain cold (near-zero). Most properties are open by late March; confirm directly before booking. We've only included properties with two or more independent sources—several guesthouses in town don't clear that bar.
The Royal Kargil (₹3.5–6k) and Hotel The Kargil (₹4–7k) overlap in price band by as little as ₹500/night at the low end. If you're paying the ₹1–2k/night delta for Hotel The Kargil, you're trading the Suru River backdrop for full AC, a central bazaar location, and a more reliable booking interface—a reasonable swap only if walkability to the market matters more than a window over the river.
The Royal Kargil
New management has retrained staff and redesigned interiors and exteriors, and 40+ Tripadvisor reviews back that up with consistent praise for owner-level personal attention—rare in a transit town. An August 2025 reviewer called rooms modern and clean with river views, and noted breakfast and dinner as standouts. For a Kargil overnight, that's the full brief covered.
Zojila Residency
At ₹3,218 on Expedia (2026 pricing), this is the best-documented property in Kargil—four independent sources, 40+ Tripadvisor reviews, and consistent 4.2–4.5/5 ratings on MakeMyTrip across two years. Suru River bank location with a rooftop terrace and buffet meals included means you arrive, drop bags, and eat—no coordination required on a transit night.
Hotel The Kargil
The only property in the dossier sitting directly on the Kargil main bazaar. If you're here to resupply, arrange permits, or catch an early departure on NH1, walking distance to the market is the entire argument. Full AC across all 30 rooms and 3 suites—the first hotel in Kargil to offer that—means April nights are manageable without chasing down a room heater.
The Highland Mountain Resort & Spa Kargil
The only property in Kargil advertising a spa—massage services documented on Tripadvisor 2025 reviews—which is a specific and unexpected thing to find 2.5 km from NH1 at 2,676m altitude. If you're mid-route on a Srinagar–Leh drive and your body has taken the Zoji La, this is the one stop where recovery is actually on the menu. Trekking arrangements offered on-site as well.
