Tso Moriri is a pristine high-altitude lake at 4522m on the Changthang Plateau — far less visited than Pangong. Home to Changpa nomadic herders and their pashmina goats. The lake is a Ramsar wetland site with bar-headed geese and black-necked cranes. Truly remote and otherworldly.

Changpa nomads live in yak-hair tents (rebo) with pashmina goats. They welcome visitors with butter tea. Buy raw pashmina directly.
Held annually on the 3rd and 4th days of the sixth month of the Tibetan lunar calendar — 17 and 18 July in 2026 — at Korzok Monastery (Drukpa Kagyu, 17th c.) on Tso Moriri's shore. The Cham masked dance is performed by monks in brocade robes and deity/demon masks to the rhythm of long horns and drums, narrating the triumph of good over evil. The Black Hat Dance is the signature item. The setting — 4520m alpine plateau, lake reflecting the masks, Changpa nomads from surrounding encampments attending — is unmatched in the Himalayan festival circuit. Pre-acclimatise in Leh; sleeping at Korzok requires 2 days at 3500m+ first.
Tso Moriri was added to the Ramsar List on 19 August 2002 (notified November 2002) — one of India's earliest high-altitude wetland inscriptions. It sits inside Changthang Cold Desert Wildlife Sanctuary and is the ONLY breeding ground OUTSIDE CHINA for the endangered Black-necked Crane (Grus nigricollis — Ladakh's state bird) and the only breeding ground in India for Bar-headed Geese. Other Changthang residents: Tibetan wild ass (kiang), Tibetan wolf, Pallas's cat. Cranes arrive May, nest Jun-Jul, fledglings fly Sep, depart Oct. Ramsar rules: stay 50m from any visible nest; no drones; no boats. Birding hours: dawn 5-7am near the marsh between Korzok and Thugje villages.

4520 मीटर पर कोरज़ोक मठ (Drukpa Kagyu, 17वीं सदी) चांगथांग के इस हिस्से का सबसे ऊँचाई पर स्थित कार्यशील मठ है। इसकी रसोई, सभा कक्ष से जुड़ी हुई, निवासी भिक्षुओं और तीर्थयात्रियों की सेवा करती है और निर्धारित भोजन समय पर आगंतुकों का स्वागत करती है। भोजन मठ की परंपरा के अनुसार है: त्सम्पा (भुने जौ का आटा) मथी गई याक मक्खन की चाय के साथ, स्क्यू (सब्ज़ी शोरबे में हाथ से बना आटा), और थुपका। यह उन बिरले स्थानों में से एक है जहाँ चांगपा-तिब्बती मठ का आहार ठीक परंपरा के अनुसार चखा जा सकता है — 4520 मीटर पर, त्सो मोरिरी के किनारे।
Tip: सुबह 6:30-8 बजे और दोपहर 12-1 बजे भिक्षु भोजन समय पर उपलब्ध। थोड़ा दान दें। पहले अनुकूलन करें — पहुँचने के दिन भारी भोजन न करें। Korzok Gustor (17-18 जुलाई 2026) के दौरान रसोई सभी उपस्थित लोगों के लिए विस्तारित भोजन परोसती है।
