The stay decisions worth flagging in Umlingla.
Umlingla Pass sits at 19,300 ft. There is no accommodation at or near the pass. All stays listed here are in Hanle Village, roughly 105 km away and the only inhabited settlement serving Umlingla visitors. Village electricity runs 7 PM–11 PM only. Mobile network is BSNL only—no Jio, no Airtel. An Inner Line Permit is mandatory. In April, expect overnight temperatures well below freezing; water pipes freeze regularly. All properties are basic by any urban standard. Book every property by phone or WhatsApp—online booking infrastructure is thin across the board.
Hanle House at ₹2,000–2,800/night runs ₹400–400 more per night than Padma Homestay (₹1,600–2,400/night). That delta buys you 24/7 power backup and running hot water at specified hours—both meaningfully different at 4,500 m in April when temperatures drop hard after dark. Padma's owner Sonam Dorjay works at the Observatory and can sometimes arrange access, which is a real advantage; Hanle House's astronomy-aware caretaker Mrs. Padma covers most of that gap. If the Observatory connection matters more than reliable power and hot water, Padma is defensible—but book at least a month out and call ahead to confirm your specific room is clean and not overbooked.
Hanle House
We pick Hanle House over Padma Homestay because it is the only property here with 24/7 power backup and running hot water at specified hours—both non-trivial in April at 4,500 m. Tripadvisor Travelers' Choice, consistently rated #1 in Hanle across 2023–2025 reviews. Caretaker Mrs. Padma is astronomy-aware, which partially substitutes for Padma Homestay owner Sonam Dorjay's direct Observatory connection. The Indian Astronomical Observatory is a 15–20 minute drive from the property.
Naga Basti Homestay
₹1,700/night with breakfast and dinner included is the sharpest all-in rate in Hanle. Hosts Kasang and Dolma run a tight operation by local standards—western toilet, hot water, a Bukhari wood stove for April cold, and organic food. Located in Naga sub-village, which puts you in a wheat field setting with direct sightlines to the observatory hill rather than on the main village road. June 2024 reviews on Homestays of India confirm warm rooms, clean beds, and food that is actually good.
No location pick here that's worth the flag. See alternatives below.
Padma Homestay (Sonam's Guest House)
Owner Sonam Dorjay works at the Indian Astronomical Observatory. That is not a marketing line—it means he can sometimes facilitate access or informal briefings that no other property in Hanle can offer. His wife Padma manages the day-to-day. The attached bathrooms in the newer wing and vegetarian Ladakhi cuisine are functional. Multiple travel editors and repeat guests have called this the default Hanle overnight for a decade. The Observatory connection is the specific, non-replicable reason to

सांस्कृतिक संदर्भ
Umling La is the world's highest motorable road at 5883m, built by the Indian Army's Border Roads Organisation. Opened in 2021. This is an extreme-altitude destination — not a tourist spot but an endurance challenge. Near the China border on the Changthang Plateau.
