Yamunotri in March
Uttarakhand, India
March: still closed. The lower sections of the approach road begin clearing. Barkot (the staging town, 1,220m) thaws. The temple at 3,293m remains buried. The hot springs under snow continue their geological work. The BRO begins road clearance operations.
The March story
Still closed. The logistics plan: Yamunotri is typically Day 1-2 of the Char Dham circuit. The standard itinerary: Haridwar/Rishikesh → Barkot (overnight) → Janki Chatti → Yamunotri (trek, darshan, return to Janki Chatti) → Barkot → onward to Uttarkashi for Gangotri leg. The 6km trek takes 3-4 hours up, 2-3 hours down. The trail is well-maintained during season — stone steps in sections, railing in dangerous spots. The altitude gain (600m) is moderate but the last kilometre is steep. Physical preparation: ability to walk uphill for 3 hours at moderate altitude. Accommodation at Janki Chatti is basic (₹500-1,500) — multiple guest houses. The temple area has dharamsalas (₹200-500) and GMVN rest house. The hot springs for bathing (Gauri Kund, a milder pool) are the trek's warm reward after the cold climb. Book May opening week for the most auspicious darshan.
