Yamunotri in January
Uttarakhand, India
January: Yamunotri is sealed under snow at 3,293m. The temple (source of the Yamuna River, one of the Char Dham) is closed for winter — the deity has been moved to Kharsali village for winter worship. The trek from Janki Chatti (6km) is impassable. The hot springs that make Yamunotri unique are buried. Temperatures at -15 to -5°C.
The January story
No access to the temple. Yamunotri is the westernmost of the four Char Dham temples in Uttarakhand — the others are Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. The temple marks the source of the Yamuna River, India's second-most sacred river after the Ganga. The hot springs (Surya Kund reaches 88°C — enough to cook rice in minutes) are Yamunotri's unique geological feature: volcanic heat meeting Himalayan glacial water. The pilgrimage logistics: drive to Barkot (from Dehradun, 165km, 6 hours) or Hanuman Chatti → drive/walk to Janki Chatti → trek 6km to the temple. The trek is moderate but at altitude (2,690m to 3,293m). Ponies (₹600-1,000) and palanquins (₹2,500-4,000) are available for those who can't walk. Accommodation at Janki Chatti (₹500-1,500) and basic dharamsalas near the temple. Plan for May-June or late September-October.
