Tso Moriri in February
Ladakh, India
February is Tso Moriri at maximum winter. The lake is solid ice. The surrounding Changthang plateau — 4,500m average elevation, treeless, windswept — is at its most inhospitable. The kiang (wild ass) and Tibetan wolves that inhabit the area survive but barely. Temperatures can drop to -30°C. The road from Leh is months from opening. Plan for June-September.
The February story
Still frozen and inaccessible. February is research time. The Tso Moriri experience is fundamentally different from Pangong: no Bollywood connection (the '3 Idiots' effect drives Pangong tourism), no paved road, no tourist infrastructure. What it has: the largest high-altitude lake entirely within India (Pangong straddles the China border), a UNESCO-recognized wetland, and one of the last places where traditional Changpa nomadic life continues largely unchanged. The Changpa are the guardians of the pashmina goat — their cashmere processing at 4,500m is a craft that no factory can replicate. A Tso Moriri visit is a cultural and ecological experience. Book through Leh-based operators who arrange permits, vehicles, and camping. The 2-day itinerary (Leh to Tso Moriri via Tso Kar, overnight at Korzok, return next day) is the standard.
