Tso Moriri in December
Ladakh, India
Road access closes from November through May due to heavy snowfall and subzero temperatures
December: Tso Moriri is frozen solid. The Changthang is at its most extreme. No access, no services, no visitors. The lake won't reopen until May-June. The pashmina goats that produce the world's finest cashmere survive this cold because they have to — their undercoat, evolved for -30°C, is what makes Ladakhi pashmina priceless. The lake waits under ice for another year.
The December story
Frozen solid, inaccessible, and at its most extreme. December at Tso Moriri is -25 to -30°C. The only inhabitants are the Changpa in their winter settlements and the wildlife evolved for these conditions. The lake under ice is a white plain at 4,522m. The pashmina goats that graze these winter pastures produce the undercoat that becomes the world's most expensive natural fibre — ₹20,000-50,000 per kilogram of raw pashmina. The economics of extreme cold: the goats need -20°C to grow the fine undercoat. December Tso Moriri exists in its extremity. Plan for June-September. The lake is worth the wait and the effort.
