April: the Changthang thaws slowly. Ice on Tso Moriri begins cracking but the lake is far from open water. Roads are still closed or barely cleared. The high-altitude desert shows its first signs of life — marmots emerge, pika colonies activate, migrating birds arrive early. The road from Leh via Upshi-Chumur is not reliable until June. Don't attempt access without confirmation.
The April story
The Changthang stirs. Marmots and pika emerge from winter burrows — the first signs of life on the plateau. The kiang herds start gathering in their summer patterns. The early migratory birds — ruddy shelducks, bar-headed geese — appear at partially-thawed water bodies. The lake itself is still largely frozen. The road is still unreliable. But April in Leh is the time to book your June-September trip: arrange permits, hire a vehicle with an experienced driver, and plan the route. The Tso Moriri-Tso Kar combination route (3 days from Leh) is the classic itinerary. Some operators offer Hanle (the astronomical observatory, another 100km south) as an extension — the night sky from Hanle at 4,500m is India's finest stargazing.
